1975 Super Bowl featured classic battle between Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings
The Super Bowl is known as the most exciting event in sports today, but it
was not always quite the production that it is today. The game started to really
gain the attention of the American people in the 1970's. The game in 1975 was a
classic one as the Pittsburgh Steelers took on the Minnesota Vikings.
The
Pittsburgh Steelers represented the AFC after a 13-3-1 season and the Minnesota
Vikings represented the NFC after a 12-5 season. The Vikings were in the Super
Bowl the previous year and were dominated by the Dolphins. The Vikings were
desperate to turn things around in 1975 and take home a Super Bowl victory after
the loss in the previous season.
The Steelers were the Super Bowl betting
favorites to win this game. The odds makers had the Vikings listed as 3 point
underdogs for the game.
The weaknesses of the Vikings in their previous
Super Bowl were their inability to score the ball and their inability to stop
the running game of the Dolphins. They would face similar challenges in this
game as the Steelers were known for having a staunch defense and a powerful
running game behind Franco Harris.
The game started off as a physical
battle. In the first quarter neither team was able to get things going
offensively, and there were no points scored. The second quarter featured a
continued defensive battle and it was actually the defense of the Steelers that
put the first points on the board. The Steelers managed to force a safety in the
second quarter to go up 2-0. The score would actually be tied 2-0 going into
halftime.
The second half featured a lot more offense than the first
half. Franco Harris started chugging along and carried the ball into the end
zone to put the Steelers up 9-0 going into the fourth quarter of play. The
Minnesota Vikings found their team scoreless going into the fourth quarter for
the second consecutive season. This year they were within striking range,
however and they would make a run towards victory.
The Vikings blocked a
punt and scored a touchdown to bring the score closer. Unfortunately the Vikings
were unable to convert on the extra-point and they were down 9-6 in this game.
The Steelers received some help from their passing game late in the game as
Terry Bradshaw threw a 4 yard touchdown to go up 16-6 in the fourth quarter.
This would be enough to secure a victory for the Steelers as this would be the
final score of the game.
The dominant factor in this game was the running
of Franco Harris. Harris carried the ball 34 times for 158 yards and a touchdown
in the game. He was helped by other running backs on the team as the Steelers
finished with 249 yards on the ground for the game.
Harris was named the
Most Valuable Player of the game for this Super Bowl as the Minnesota Vikings
fell for the second consecutive season at the hands of a dominant running
back.
