Fitted Shirts C What To Look For When Buying A Fitted Shirt

When trying on your fitted dress shirt either in a store or when getting it from your shirt maker there are a few things you should keep an eye out for if you have intentions on picking what can be considered a well fitted shirt.

• Shoulder Width - Find the end of your top shoulder bone and make sure that the shoulder seams align with it. Far too many men are wearing shirts that sag below this point, which in turn affects the look of the shirts on other areas.

• Sleeve Length - When standing with your arms relaxed down along your arms a fitted dress shirt has a sleeve ending at the top thumb knuckle if the cuff is not buttoned.

• Waist - Often standard sizes have a tent like affect along the waist of the dress shirt. To achieve a normal fit try sitting down with the shirt on and make sure that the waist fabric cannot extend more than a fist size from your stomach. For a slim fit it should be about half a fist size.

• Shirt Length - For the shirt length you should consider if you are looking for a shirt that is to be tucked in or remain out of your pants. For tucked in dress shirts the shirt should end about ½ inch above the end of your pants zipper. For un-tucked dress shirts it should end about 1 ½ inches above that same spot. This is a subjective matter, however.

There are generally three options when it comes to dress shirts:

  1. Athletic fitted shirts - Fits for this type of build are usually called athletic, slim, or modern fit. These fits come with a narrower waist, chest, and hip area.
  1. Standard sized dress shirts – These sizes are a bit larger and looser which doesn’t allow for much of a fitted look. Usually these shirts result in a sloppier and baggier look.
  1. Custom made fitted shirts - By getting a custom fitted shirt you get a shirt that follows your specific dimensions and you’ll have complete control over the final fit of the shirt. Nine times out of ten the fit is better with the fully customizable shirt.

For those who want a clean cut look, then wearing a fitted shirt is the only option. A cleaner cut will lead to a more presentable look and more appealing to everyone. Be careful when buying standard shirt sizes or pre-made shirt sizes though, sizes vary from store to store and often times you won’t be able to get the same look as you can with a custom or tailor made fitted dress shirt. The best choice is to go to a tailor and get a custom made dress shirt. A tailor will be able to measure your upper body and provide the best fitting shirt you’ll ever have. There are even several online options that provide detailed information on how to measure your own body so you’ll have complete control over the fit of the shirt.
