braylon-edwards-photoSan Jose, Costa Rica, Sept. 9, 2008 C What makes a great athlete Self-confidence and competitiveness are common traits, and both obviously are ingrained in Cleveland Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards and Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps.

And now you can bet at WagerWeb.com on which of those athletes will win their friendly wager.

Edwards and Phelps have University of Michigan connections, with Edwards a former Wolverines star and Phelps having trained mostly in Ann Arbor, and they became friends. Edwards even joined Phelps for a workout during the NFL offseason.

Once. It wasnt fun, Edwards said. First of all, you have to be in the pool by 6 a.m. And its too much swimming.

Before the Beijing Games, Edwards bragged that he would more than double Phelps gold-medal total at the Games with touchdown catches this NFL season.

Not a far-fetched bet, as Edwards had a breakout season last year in Cleveland, catching a team-record 16 touchdown passes. Unfortunately for Edwards, he will have to set a new Browns record of 17 in 2008 to back up that boast.

Phelps, of course, won eight gold medals in Beijing, breaking Mark Spitzs single Games record of seven and becoming an American icon.

Edwards His first effort this year left a long way to go: The fourth-year player caught only two balls for 14 yards in Clevelands Week 1 home loss to Dallas, and he never sniffed the end zone.

Is this a fair bet Edwards must rely on his quarterback to get him the ball, while Phelps only had to rely on teammates in three of his eight events in Beijing. And certainly football players are much more subject to injury than are swimmers.

Seems like a long shot for Edwards and the WagerWeb.com indicate show that, but if it doesnt work out this time against Phelps, perhaps there will be a rematch in the 2012 NFL season and the London Olympics.

Dave Johnson, an experienced oddsmaker for Inspin.com, had the following to say regarding the Braylon Edwards bet: This is not the first time we have seen an NFL wide receiver write a check their body cant cash. Edwards had good numbers last season and he may have gotten a little full of himself. As we saw in preseason the Browns are not the offensive juggernaut they were last season. I expect many people to bet against Edwards scoring 17 touchdowns this season. The 16 touchdowns he scored last year will be very hard to duplicate with this beaten down team.
