NFL Handicapping Week 2 C Will The Patriots Win in a Blowout?
The New England Patriots head into New Meadowlands Stadium this weekend for what turns out to be the New York Jets' biggest game of the season.I know it's only Week 2, but the Jets are 0-1 and historically very few teams dig themselves out of an 0-2 hole to reach the playoffs. In fact, only about 10 percent of all the teams that started 0-2 since 1991 have made the playoffs. The Jets will be hungry. They will be backed in a corner. They will be dangerous.?
After their respective games last week, one would think the Patriots should stomp the Jets this weekend. The Pats put up 38 points against a team we all thought had a pretty solid defense, behind a defensive minded coach in Marvin Lewis and the Cincinnati Bengals.?
The Patriots defense held the Bengals to 3 points until half way through the third quarter, when they seemed to let up a bit and gave up a couple of TDs, which made for the respectable looking final of 38-24.?
But the truth was, the Patriots did whatever they wanted, scored however they wanted (offense, defense, special teams all had touchdowns) and ran over and through the once and current Bungles. The gambling world and every football handicapper saw this game as about a three point favorite for the home Patriots and in Vegas giving saying the home team will win by three is the same thing as basically saying these teams are equal.Clearly, they were not.
At the other end of the spectrum were the New York Jets.Yes, they faced a fired up and talented Baltimore defense.Yes, the Ravens were angry about all the attention the Jets had been getting.Ray Lewis spoke openly about how the Jets had not won anything yet, and how he was there to show the media and all the fans that the Ravens were the team that should be getting all the attention, not the Jets. And yes, the Ravens offense, specifically their receiving core, is better than last year with the signings of Anquan Boldin and T.J. Houshmandzadeh. But all told, the Ravens could only muster 10 points. One touchdown and one field goal. The Jets, however, could not even do that. They scored on three field goals and had countless chances to do more.Mark Sanchez looked awful and the running game (aside from a few nice bursts from LaDanian Tomlinson) never got going. They were unable to muster the single touchdown they needed to secure a win.Which brings us back to this week's matchup.
How can Las Vegas only have the Patriots winning by 3 points when they looked so incredibly good last week and the Jets looked so unbelievably badBecause defense wins championships and the Jets have a great one.Because no one wants to start 0-2 and the Jets will be desperate.Because some might think that Mark Sanchez is better than 10-21 for 74 yards and a 56.4 passer rating.?
He has to get better, rightWell, maybe. The Patriots may not have the Ravens defense, but they do have a very good one.And in a league where the quarterback is the most important player, the Patriots have about six legs up on the Jets. One might think after watching the two teams last week that the Patriots will win going away. But this game will be close and the Patriots will have to bring everything they have to get out of New Meadowlands Stadium with a win.?
